Mary was interred at Peterborough Cathedral and remained there until 1612 when her son - who had succeeded Elizabeth as James 1st, and thus united the crowns of Scotland and England – ordered her exhumation and afforded her a Royal resting place in Westminster Abbey, just a short distance from Elizabeth 1st.
As for Fotheringay Castle, in 1623 its then owner, the Earl of Newport, had it razed to the ground and much of its stone was carted away to be incorporated into numerous buildings around the neighbourhood. Part of it suposdly went to the nearby Talbot Inn, which is now reputedly haunted by the ghost of Mary Queen of Scots.
And perhaps the most surprising thing about the whole story of Mary, Queen of Scots is that the two women, Mary and Elizabeth, around whom the whole saga revolved and who have been so indelibly linked together by history, never actually met.
